Twister Up to this point the machines at every stage have drafted and twisted the worsted wool, making it thinner and stronger. Drafting makes the yarn longer but it does not stretch it. The individual fibres slide over each other allowing the yarn to be longer. Twister twists but does not draft. It folds three or four yarns to make a yarn for knitting or weaving. In the slide show sopposite we can clearly see, in the foreground, four yarns being fed to one roller. Those four yarns will be twisted together to make one thicker and stronger yarn. Arran consists of three yarns; double knit has four. The yarn is almost ready for use. If it is to be used for knitting it next needs to be made into skeins. |
